Foray into 3D Photogrammetry

An Exercise in 3D Photogrammetry
3D Photogrammetry is the process of creating a 3D digital model from scanning a real world environment or object. A key aspect of 3D photogrammetry that stands out to me is how realistic the 3D models are, but with just a touch of uncanny valley. So For my first foray into 3D Photogrammetry I wanted to highlight this by turning a mundane scene into something otherworldly.
To create this scene I took 3 separate 3D photogrammetry scans using the Polycam app on my iPhone 11. The first scan was of my friend sitting in a chair. I was able to get a fairly decent scan after two attempts and taking hundreds of photos.
Next I took a scan of a corner of my bedroom. There was not a lot of light in the room so I was concerned about the quality of the scan and I was not sure how the computer screen would come out, but after a few scans I got one that seemed promising.
The last scan was taken outdoors. This was the most difficult scan as the wind and limited viewing angles made it difficult to get a cohesive scan.
As you can see none of the 3D models were perfect, but that is what I was hoping for. I proceeded to take all the models into Blender and altered all of them to fix some of the more glaring issues. Finally I brought all of the models into the same project and integrated them together with added lighting to create an entirely new scene. Ultimately I was happy with my final project as it balances the surreal with the uncanny in a very interesting way.
